Hi Christopher, I LOVED your book! You add an analytical framework to an artistic endeavor. I am an A1 Dramatic-Alluring size 8-10 5'9" 49 year old. Now, I find that much of what I had done intuitively makes sense intellectually. For example, about 3 years ago I took many of my older designer jackets to an excellent sempstress. She altered the shoulders, switched the bright gold round buttons to more neutral ones, and cropped the sleeves. I felt that this made me look younger and fresher. All the women in the office claimed I had lost 10 lbs. After reading your book I understand why. I had always used colors, but am now very conscience of line and texture as well.
I also related to your story about the middle aged woman who felt she had become invisible. I remember my Mother suggesting that in a way God was merciful to save Princess Diana from aging, which she said was so hard for a beautiful women. After working on Wall Street for 20 years, I sold my business last September. I have a 6 year old daughter and thought I would try being a stay-at-home mom. For the first time ever I am really struggling w my look. All the mothers of young children in my town wear jeans and flats. I've been trying to go casual, but this is the opposite of what makes me comfortable. After your book, I have resolved to stay closer to my own look. I would welcome any additional suggestions you have for how a Dramatic-Alluring can look look casual. How do you work a look that is far from your own? I dread looking out of Green Acres. I love jackets, skirts, and bright colors.
Thanks for your help,
Clarissa
PS loved your defense of panty hose.
Dear Clarissa,
Thank you so much...I love getting letters like these. You are not alone in wondering how to express your ideal look surrounded in a world that doesn't get it. It's often just not fun to dress up and love how you look, and walk into Wal-mart and everybody just stares. But, I figure, let them stare. Some of us are here to help raise the standards of dress and style that have fallen so sadly short of what once once normal.
The key with the dramatic alluring is to continue with eye make up and hairstyles that express this strong and sensual part of you. Jeans that fit and flatter, a top that fits your body type can be casual, but also dramatic and alluring. There is no need to tone it down to boring and bland to blend.
P.S. Eva rocked Green Acres!
