I am often in debate upon how we "should" appear in public. There are the "look your best when you walk out the door" camp and the "who cares, there are other more important things to worry about" camp. Guess in which camp I belong? I don't always look perfect, but I do try to look my best when I leave my house. That's usually relative to the consumption of bad carbs and salt the day before, but that removed, I still try. Consquently I am familiar with the phrase "why don't you just relax?" Or "just be yourself." (This IS myself by the way, the one who makes the effort, not the one who smells a little gamey and didn't do his hair). Those in that camp don't feel it that important to look their best when just running errands, for instance.
It may not be important to you. No problem. That's how you wish to present yourself. My belief is "you can be the best, or you can be the rest". A choice. Most people are the rest. The average, the "normal" the mean, the median. There is nothing wrong with that. But I don't want to be the rest. I want to be the best -- at everything I do. I may not always actually accomplish that, but making the effort helps me rise above my average self
When it comes to how I look, how I speak, how I walk, how I treat people, how I perform in public, I do want to be MY best. I am surely not THE best, but MY best is all I can work toward. It's a constant and never ending process.
When a woman sits in my chair and I ask if she wears more make up than what she has on (knowing she has NONE on) I want to know how she "normally" looks. I often hear this line:
"I'll wear make up when I go out."
"Where are you now?" is usually my response.
"Well, I'm just getting my hair done...."
WHAT? You are staring at yourself in a mirror for 45 minutes and I have to judge how I'm going to balance my styling and cut to a face with no make up? WHAT?"
That is either the last time they come to me, or the last time they come to me without putting their make up on. I just do not understand that. Everyone is looking at everyone at a BEAUTY salon.
So the next time you go shopping, or running errands, or to the salon, consider looking your best. You'll be glad you took the time to rise just a little step above and beyond...the rest.
